New Lunchtime Routines

Today is the first day William has ever been to the canteen at school. The typical bureaucratic rabbit hole of life in France has meant that the woman who runs the canteen has been able to refuse him entry, even though we had a letter from the doctor stating that he just had a walnut allergy. I even asked it I could send him with a packed lunch and I was still told, "Non". We had a review meeting with the specialist on Friday and he shook his head in disbelief as Jess explained for me, the barriers that have been put in our way. He wrote a letter back to them stating: ONLY walnuts; other nuts are permitted, as are trace elements. Finally, they said yes and I signed him up for today and tomorrow.

He's been so excited about this. It seems like a mythical place for him: The Canteen! I just hope its not all a big disappointment. The best bit will be that he gets to play with all his pals right through lunchtime rather than him staying at home with me for two hours. I'm so happy that he wants to go too, and that I don't feel like I'm abandoning him there. He has not stopped talking about it since his letter was approved on Friday. I'm already looking forward to going and getting him after school today to find out all about it.

It's actually been a bit of strange day, knowing I have a full day ahead of me but due to the Covid restrictions, plus my back problems, not really being able to capitalise on this new found freedom. I had all these amazing ideas of what it would be like to have a full day to myself, and what have I actually done? Been to the physio this morning, got some groceries, spent almost two hours on FaceTime to Angie, had some lunch and cleaned the wee toilet. I've pretty much had my eye on the clock all day, wondering what William's been up to and I realise now that having him home for lunch provided me with tangible targets for my day: I need to get this done by lunch, and then I'll get that done in the afternoon. Today, I've barely gotten anything done. I think it might take a while to adjust to the new lunchtime regime.
