Y10 Camp

I've just had four cracking days away from school on Y10 Camp. (S3 Outdoor Ed trip). They love their trips out here (Suzy Watson, you would be in your element) and there is a separate camp available for each year group every term, but as its such a big school - about 1200 students - we also have to split up the year groups to take them away. We have four Whanau (houses) at AJHS: Ruru, Kiwi, Makomako and Tui. I am in Ruru and we took about 60 Y10 kids away along with a similar number of kids from Kiwi. We were staying at Finlay Park, an adventure camp near Cambridge which is about two and a half hours drive south from Auckland.
As you can see, its right on a river which meant that our a lot of four days were spent either in or on the water taking part in some crazy activities. These were in addition to some even more mental ones on dry(ish) land. The rain couldn't have come down any harder during our time there but the hardy NZ kids just got stuck in - as ever running around in shorts and bare feet, as I had my full waterproofs on! Our week involved: kayaking, shooting, abseiling, animal survival (a sort of cross between sodies/tig/two man hunt but designating all players as a set animal on a food chain. Drop all the 'animals' on the muddiest island full of mangroves to and you've kinda got the idea), orienteering, night-time river trips to see Glow Worms, go-karting, and gorge walking (not quite like home as half the group were blindfolded and had to be led up the gorge by the other half. And they were all in bare feet). We also gave the kids quite a bit of free time and they were able to enjoy the camps facilities: a 40 person spa, outdoor pool, flying fox, skate park, and a some other really dangerous/scary/typical NZ/not health and safety approved outdoor stuff. I went on one called the Blob. Although there's no actual footage of me on it, I found a video of it from another group. Click here to see why I was so terrified! Here's some other proper pics of our trip...
The kids here are also right into a type of dancing called Shuffling. It tends to be mostly boys who shuffle and it seems to involve sort of dance offs in groups. I think it looks like an adapted Running Man from the 90s. You decide...
They're good kids though, so really encouraging of each other. Even if someone new wants to try their hand. Even a teacher!

Great trip - canny wait till the next one now!!!
