Mount Taranaki is such a dominating figure on the landscape here and the Taranaki people are extremely proud of it. There is powerful Maori mythology around the Mountain and you are not allowed to walk on various sections of it as they are classed as tapu (sacred). The weather is quite ropey here so you can go for days without seeing it, but when it comes out, the 'Naki folk just seem that bit happier. Here are some shots of the mountain from various towns around the province.

On a clear day you can see Mount Ruapehu from my classroom window. Ruapehu is the highest point in the North Island, the largest active volcano in New Zealand and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Good job we're almost four hours drive away!
I hope you enjoyed today's geography lesson!

When the volcano dies down you must do the Tongariro crossing - as far as I know you haven't done that yet. A definite highlight.....definitely...
