The past few weeks have involved quite a bit of food related fun. It all started with a bake sale at school where I decided to whip up some fun little cup cakes. I didn't really know how it was all going to work but I just made some cakes and dropped them off at school first thing in the morning (to oohs and aaaahs from the teachers!) and then headed round to the school later in the day (with Fish, who has just arrived from New Zealand) to then buy the cakes that I'd made. I'm glad I went round though as it's good to support the PTA.
I think I need to work on my piping, and certainly use more icing next time but, on the whole, I was pleased with them. I think the PTA were too: they'd sold loads by the time we got round.
William has continued to enjoy helping in the kitchen and he's now trying his hand at french toast. Like a good wee sous chef, he always cleans up after himself too. :)
For the most part, I'd say I'm quite happy with the availability of GF food in the supermarkets here in Pau but I need to remind myself to continue checking ingredients just like I used to do in NZ. I made chilli last week and after it felt really bloated. Checked the ingredients in the chilli beans that I'd always used as they were safe but now they have a may contain statement on them. DAMNIT!
On the opposite end of the gf scale I had an amazingly positive and reassuring meal last week at Cafe du Passage in town. Iain and I had gone on a double date (what?! - we were out!) with Lee and Conrad to see Bohemian Rhapsody and afterwards went out for a bite to eat. I nervously asked about allergens and to my astonishment, the waiter came back with a full allergens menu. I could not believe it!!! Finally, we have an alternative to the sans gluten burger at Le Boulevard. I think William will like it in Passage too as they've have a cool little train that runs on a track suspended from the ceiling. I'm kicking myself that it's taken me so long to find this place and I'm already looking forward to going back.
Now that we're into December, some of our food things have taken on a more Christmas feel. I've even been baking cakes for the Christmas market at school. I'm not exactly a Stepford Wife yet, but my piping game is coming on!
Christmas is coming!
Lorna :)
