An Air of Anxiety

I feel the need to write something tonight about how we're all [I'm] feeling. Lockdown eased about 10 weeks ago here in France and we gradually came out of our homes and back onto the streets, shops, cafes and restaurants, finding ourselves in a New Normal. Looking back, those early days and weeks were very tentative but people got their mojos back and before long, the streets very busy again and things were seemingly not that different to the pre-Covid days. Less people were wearing masks, playgrounds were packed, and we were all starting to make plans for the summer holidays. Even three weeks ago we were talking about a trip to the Costa Brava for Iain's week off. But it feels like the tide is turning. Masks are now compulsory across the country and the news is reporting spikes in cases. Despite an airbridge opening up between the UK and Spain only a few weeks ago, the UK imposed a 14 day quarantine restriction on people returning from Spain effective from midnight on Saturday and today it was reported that Germany is now advising against all travel to Spain. Worryingly, the three areas which are hardest hit are Catalonia, Navarre and Aragon. All just over the border. We have to hope that the Pyrenées continue to provide that strong physical border between the two countries. And if they don't, the French authorities need to look at shutting things down quickly. Iain's got next week off and our indecision continues over where or if we should travel. This virus isn't going away any time soon and we don't want to be taking unnecessary risks. Life is very uncertain.
