Winter School Holidays

When I think back to what we were doing this time last year; a ski roady to Cauterets plus a two week trip back to Scotland, it seems like a different life. I suppose I should be thankful for small mercies. If everyone else was away to the mountains and I was stuck at home, I'd be absolutely spewing, so at least it's not just me in the hoose every day. In many ways, my recovery and rehab couldn't be at a better time. That is, of course, apart from the fact that William has had the past two weeks off school for the French winter holidays.

Trying to keep him entertained was always going to be tricky. Aside from him now being five and a half and not wanting to just hang out with his mum all the time, I wasn't able to drive so offsite playdates weren't on the cards. I had district nurse visits every two days which I had to be home for, and even just short walks were tiring and caused a wee bit of pain. Add to this, a forecast of some typically wet February weather for the first week, and things were looking pretty challenging. Enter stage left: Maison Daran. This is the holiday activity school at the local Centre Loisir that William went to last summer. You can read it about it here. I asked him if he wanted to see if there were any places available and he almost jumped out of his skin with excitement. We headed down on Tuesday to enquire and managed to get him in two days on the first week, and three days on week two. Talk about a lifeline! He had such a great time. When I went to get him on the Friday of the first week he burst into tears - he wanted to stay longer! It's really just allowed me to spend time recuperating. I don't think I've ever spent so much time lying on the couch and watch tv during the day. I've also managed to get my hair cut and coloured (impossible before surgery!) and hang out at Claire Whitelock's for Hannha's baby shower as well as get my first round of post-op bloods done and collect all sorts of new medicines. On the days William was home with me, we built lots of Lego, managed to get his allergy bloods done, did some playing at Hedas and Beaumont and had some playdates with Arlo and Kaia. Amongst all this, there's also been Pancake Tuesday and lots of football with his dad.

It's back to school tomorrow though and I'm looking forward to the routine. I feel like I've lost weeks and weeks due to the debilitating pain and subsequent surgery and that it's now time to get back to some normality. The fog is lifting (pain free and no morphine!) and I've got one eye on spring and spring cleaning. I even drove today for the first time. Hawd me back!
