ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand celebrated on the 25th April each year. Although the Day recognises all servicemen and women who have lost their lives in battle, it focuses upon the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during WW1.
Jabba is currently serving in the NZ Navy and was part of the parade on the North Shore held at Browns Bay. The ceremony is similar to our Remembrance Sunday, but the main difference is that the ANZAC ceremonies are held at dawn. There were over a thousand people attending the event at Browns Bay and I found it very moving. There is a real sense of community here and it was amazing to see so many people head down onto the beach at 5.30am to watch the sun come up and pay their respects. The local branch of the RSA (Returned Services Association) was so welcoming, inviting the whole crowd back for snacks and drinks. It was good to see all the old boys getting stuck into the hard stuff a seven in the morning. They certainly deserve it.
