Yesterday Iain and I went to our local beach - "Back Beach" which is less than 10mins drive from our house. Due to Mount Taranaki being a volcano, the sand here is black, but its still a beautiful area, with clear waters and the sugar loaf islands dotted around offshore. Rising a steep 156m above the beach is the imposing Paritutu Rock which we decided to climb in order to get our first decent view of New Plymouth and Mount Taranaki.
