Day one of our South Island roadie officially started on the Wednesday when we drove the leisurely 170km to Te Anau - the gateway to Fjordland. In true Kiwi style we found ourselves a little motel room, very clearly recently "done up" but with decor and linen straight out of the '80s. It actually reminded me of one of the chalets I stayed in as a kid on a family holiday to Pontins.
