Two Weeks In at the Saloon

I'm taking a break from my retrospective blogging and make a post in 'real time' as its been such a crazy couple of weeks that I feel I can't let it pass without a proper up-to-date post, capturing the essence of our current situation. We arrived back from Scotland three weeks ago, on the Tuesday, and spent four days packing up our house and cleaning, as best we could, knowing that the building work was about to begin and that some of it would be pointless. By Sunday afternoon, all of our belongings were stored in the sleep out and we were ready to move into the AirBnB that I had jacked up while we were in Scotland.
Over the course of these four days, I must admit that William was slightly abandoned in front of the tv. He didn't mind this one little bit and it allowed us to get all the stuff done that is involved in moving house but it also meant that we probably missed a few signals that he wasn't actually that well. By the Sunday night, our first night in the AirBnB he was off his food and acting up (we thought it was just unsettledness from the move) and although he had an awful cough (which he'd had for a couple of weeks, but it had gotten worse), he went to school on the Monday. On the Monday just before dinner, he vomited, he was up about four times through the night, wouldn't sleep in his own bed, and had puss coming out of his eyes! Brutal. I had him at the Doctors on the Tuesday afternoon and she confirmed my suspicions; the 'flu. We had the next three days with him at home, miserable, off his food, not sleeping and generally not well. Not ideal in the middle of a house move when you're staying in an AirBnB with no wifi. At least the place we were staying in had amazing views and a brilliant kitchen. ;-)
I went round to the old house on the Wednesday to tidy up a few things and do some final cleaning. to say I was shocked at the state of the house was an understatement. I couldn't even get into the kitchen to clean it. So glad to be out of there now.
Thursday arrived and the move was on. I met Melanie, the owner at 11am and went through a few things for the house. And by noon, she was off and we had the keys to crack on. Iain hired a van through work and Fish, Roxy and Don Joff helped him do the flitting. It's quite amazing how much you can rack up in 18months. By about 4.30pm, they were done and we were in. Fish stayed for dinner and we got some Vietnamese from Kim's (now, just up the road!).
William still wasn't right by the Friday and the Doc got us back in to check him over again. She said it was him just getting to the end of the flu and to give him another few days. In the meantime, Orlaith arrived from Ireland! Mental. It was so great seeing her and hearing all about her time in the Naki after we left, and about her move to Dublin. We were meant to go to the rugby with her on the Saturday night but William was still too sick to be socialised so I had to get Paddy to take her along. After the game, we had a Naki reunion back here with her and Fish but it all came to an abrupt end at midnight when all our power went out. Yes, clearly parts of the house handover with Melanie had been lost in translation as the electric company hadn't started us on a new account and we got cut off. We had to call Roxy on the Sunday morning to come round and help us out with a new power company. That's definitely an example of the difficulties of living in a country where you can't speak the language. Sometimes, I just feel so useless.

All of last week we spent getting our ducks in a row and now, we're feeling quite settled. There has been a bit of a time pressure on this as the house is on the market and the guy from the agency gave us a grace period to get the place shipshape before he continued any more viewings. It wouldn't be a good look if the place was still littered with boxes and random furniture now that he's back in this week. Part of this has included the KonMari method of decluttering and tidying up. I've already even sold a few items on FB marketplace!
I'm pretty happy with how it's ticking along. I just hope it doesn't sell for months and we don't need to move again for a while. In the meantime, I'm keeping my eyes on Leboncoin for our next home.
