Summer in Scotland 2: Glasgow Gatherings

Friday 6 August - Sunday 15 August
Once we were out of quarantine, we didn't stop. We were all over the city, visiting family and friends, eating and drinking and just enjoying the familiarity and easiness of Glasgow. Here's the rundown:

Friday 6 Aug:
Big bike / run at Pollok park. Train to Jinty’s- William was absolutely pumped going on the train. Had Prosecco, fish and chip and Iain had Chinese. Good chat and it was a great night. Clare and Joe took us home.

Sat 7 August:
Went to Debbie's at lunchtime. Got the train from Maxwell park to Kirkhill. Again, super easy and William was pumped! Had a lovely day at Debbie’s. A really good blether and finally catching up properly. Her house is like a youth hostel! William had a great play with Lochlan. Ross picked Iain up about 3pm and I stayed on until about 5. William and I got the train home, I made leftover carbonara, put William to bed then worked on my CV and cover letter for a job I've seen at the SRU.

Sunday 8 Aug:
Raining cats and dogs all day. Spent the morning making adjustments to my CV while William and Iain were at the park on their bikes. I’d made some last minute arrangements to meet Livia and Luisa and surprise Susie by turning up at a gig she was doing in Partick. Went to get in a taxi and was literally wading through the water so had to tell him to go. Finally made it just before it kicked off. Really great day catching up and reminiscing about all our mad yesteryears. Went for a curry and hame by 10.30.

Monday 9 August:
Another day of torrential downpours. Went to Morrison’s in the morning for some essentials. Katie and Steph came over at about 12.30 and we all headed to Breahead to take the kids to the trampolining centre. It was heaving. Apparently the other bounce place in Glasgow had been flooded so Gravity was getting double the traffic. Kids had an absolute ball though and were sweating buckets! Came back to CHQ for afternoon tea and the kids had a good play.

Tuesday 10 August:
Got the house cleaned and tidied for Ronnie and Sheena’s return from Arran. Nice lunch at home, loads of washing done, a wee walk to the shops then a couple of beers and a curry.

Wednesday 11 Aug:
Back into rehab routine (much needed after a long weekend of nothing but over indulgence). William just with his Nanny all the time. He is so happy. Iain and I did a visit to Silverburn and he managed to get a full new outfit for Sheena’s do on Saturday. I was humming and ha-ing over things but eventually ordered shoes from Next which I was assured would arrive on the Thursday. Not my usual look - some backless loafers (?!) but think they’re a good look with my new pink trousers. Finally got myself home via Uber at just going on 6pm and made dinner for everyone - chicken enchiladas. I was a bit unsure about how they were going to go but they were an absolute winner. Yaldi.

Thursday 12 Aug:
Sheena asked me if I would accompany her down to Silverburn again today as she also needed an outfit for Saturday and just hadn’t been in the mood when she had been there yesterday. It probably didn’t help that she’d offered to take William with her! So, knowing that I also needed to collect my new shoes, and, hopefully, get some sort of jacket for my outfit, I was more than happy to head back to the shops. We were in and out in about 2.5 hours. Sheena bought herself an entire outfit, and I got my shoes and a new white blazer. Outstanding effort all round! We didn’t do much at all for the rest of day. Gayle was round with her crew in the afternoon (William and Georgie having a blast together) and I made dinner again. Bangers and mash. Yaaaaaaas.

Friday 13 August:
Got our morning exercise in again, and then headed to Jinty’s via Morrison’s where we got a load of stuff for lunch. Had good old bacon and egg rolls and spent the rest of the afternoon there, just blethering, drinking tea and playing with William. The car ride back to CHQ was brutal though - over an hour, just crawling on the motorway in rush hour traffic. We’re so not used to the big cities anymore! Dinner was simple affair of take away pizza. Oh, the absolute utter joy of being able to get take away on a Friday night.

Saturday 14 August:
Today was the big day that Iain in particular was absolutely delighted to be back in Scotland for: Sheena’s 70th Birthday celebration. We had a busy morning of exercise and last minute jobs like collecting balloons from Silverburn and buying flowers. It was a very quick turnaround into our glad rags and by 12.45pm we were all outside waiting on our Uber into town. This was Iain and I’s first time at the now legendary Brian Maule at Chardon d’Or restaurant and it certainly lived up to all the hype. We were welcomed with champagne and the family had a private room where the food and drink flowed all afternoon. It was just brilliant. After the meal, the drinks continued to get knocked back and around 4.30pm we all headed back to CHQ for lots and lots more fizz and nonsense. This was our first time at a family thing since Gregor and Emma’s wedding and my god, did we enjoy it! Wine and fizz led to daft photos and lots of dancing and by about 9.30pm everyone was suitably blazing. Going to bed is a blur, but that’s what it’s all about.

Sunday 15 Aug:
We were up through the night with a very restless William and he ended up sleeping in our bed. When I woke properly on the Sunday morning, I opened my eyes slowly and apprehensively, waiting for the full whack of my hangover to take hold. Quite unbelievably, I pulled up okay. Yeah, I felt like I’d had a big night out, but remarkably, I wasn’t absolutely dying. Head was fine; tummy was okay; just my heart going like the clappers! We got up and showered pretty early and headed for a massive walk around Pollok Park. It blew the cobwebs away and we were absolutely ready for our lunch when we got back at noon. I didn’t move far from the couch for the rest of the day apart from getting some laundry done in preparation for our trip to Arran - we only decided on Sunday morning that we would leave on Monday.
Out of the blue, Duncan Cook messaged Iain to see if he was still in Scotland as he and Susie were up in Crammond visiting her parents. Cookie had a free night and offered to drive through for a catch up. Iain was delighted. They hadn’t seen each other for a couple of years and *this* was exactly the reason we were back in Scotland. To see people! Dunc came through, we drank tea and then the two of them headed down for Strathbungo for a couple of catch-up pints and dinner. I stayed home, filled William up on leftover homemade chilli, and we all fell into bed, exhausted, at about 10pm.

It's been a busy 10 days!

Lorna. :)
