As I write this, I still can't believe we managed to get away for the last four days / five nights of the school holidays. We really shoehorned in a much needed rest after the madness of Scotland, our bout of 'flu (covid?) and William's birthday. I am so grateful. We packed the car up on the Saturday morning / early afteroon afternoon which was definitely made more tricky with the braderie and city centre ville car ban, but we got loaded up and were on the road by about 2pm. We stopped at the IKEA shopping centre to do a supermarket shop at Carrefour and we were only about another 15mins down the road until we were drawing into our accommodation. Our cabin was quite small but perfectly kitted out; the site had all the usual stuff we've come to expect from a campsite in France but this one had really great slides for William (and us!); and - slightly unexpected - the place just a short walk down to the beach.
We quickly got in and fell into our usual camping routines. I set up the house whilst Iain and William did some investigating around the site including a swim, then we had prawn past dinner and cracked open the wine on the deck. Aaaaaaaaaand relax.
The next four days were spent doing much the same. We were either by the pool, at the beach or chilling on the deck. The supermarket shop really set us up perfectly and we had everything we needed at our fingertips: food; wine; snacks; and we didn't need to do much other than hang out together, play games and read our books. It was exactly what we needed. William had a go at a couple of the kid's club activities but didn't really take to it (perhaps the staff were a bit unmotivated with it being so late in the season?) so he hung about with us for most of the time. He particularly enjoyed the beach on this trip. It's probably the first time that he been confident enough with his swimming to get right in the water and get thrown around by the waves. It was so good that even I was in!
And just like that, the summer holidays were over and it was time to get home to Pau and pack William's school bag. Two months, done.
Lorna.
