It's Saturday morning. It's me, bed, coffee, Dermott, blog. It's a good routine! I actually have quite a lot on today as I'm meeting Sophie for lunch at Blend, then we have a houseful later for the rugby so it's going to be a quick catch up on the blog this morning then into it.
So, last weekend. I was naughty and didn't go over the door at all on Saturday. I was shattered from being out with the girls on the Friday night so just pottered about at home all day with the rugby on in the background. William and I made pancakes for afternoon tea and they were absolutely brilliant. Such an easy recipe: 200g of flour + 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 100g caster sugar, 2 eggs and a splash of milk. Whisk it all up into a batter and drop into the pan. Served with maple syrup (or as William was calling it, Michael syrup) and squeezy cream. Perfect.
Friends through playgroup and Lee & Conrad, kiwis Hannah and Sam came round in the late afternoon to watch the Scotland v England match, let the kids play, and get takeaway. An easy way to spend a Saturday. William was really great with their wee ones who are only 4 and 2.
On Sunday, I forced myself to actually get out the house. It was a lovely afternoon but we just don't see it at the time of year as it's still really shaded in the courtyard. After a wee walk around town, William and I got the gardening stuff out and started some winter trimming and cutting back. It was great to get out in the fresh air for a few hours and feel like we were taking some control of our wee courtyard even with all the work going on.
We were thrown a little on Sunday night as William ended up crying himself to sleep, distraught, faced with the first real dilemma of his life. And what a bloody middle class dilemma he was facing:
A: Get the class stick insects home for two weeks for the holidays
or
B: Possibly go on a ski trip to Andorra / other roadie in the second week.
He was genuinely gutted as he just didn't know what to do. Ahhhh, welcome to real life, little one!
Monday started off with a big session at the gym, and the usual sorting things for the week ahead. William brought home his first proper school report and we were absolutely delighted with it. Generally hitting all the attainment targets across the board. Needs a wee bit more help in writing and reading in French (understandable) and off the chart in his modern language (thank god!). The big thing for us though, was that he is fully involved with his peers and happily volunteers for things in class. And I quote: "Bravo, William". 😍
Iain and I went walking on Tuesday morning and it was absolutely beautiful. We are so lucky to get to do this.
I managed to get all my french notes and homework done before my lesson on Tuesday afternoon and went to see Sylvie to get my weekly dose of conjugations and self doubt. Apparently, I'm getting somewhere though - she even did a dance of joy when I ordered a sentence correctly when using a reflexive verb in the negative form.
On Wednesday, the plumber was meant to fix the radiators but didn't show up as he'd "forgotten". Classic french. He's still not been back in touch to rearrange. I still owe him for the service he did so I'm sure he wont be off the radar for too long. William had another swimming lesson at the Stade Nautique and it went brilliantly. I'm delighted.
On Thursday morning, I made myself scarce while Iain had his final interview with a sports tech company that he's been in talks with. We will see how this pans out. I had tee-ed up a walk with Hannchen who wanted to see some of the routes that we normally do so it worked out perfectly. I finished up with a much deserved coffee at Beanz. We're going well with our fasting and low carb combination so, combined with the walking and gym-ing, I'm feeling pretty good. I'm getting a lot of aches through my left thigh though, and I'm due my annual review with the back specialist so it will be interesting to hear what he has to say. I need to sort out our health insurance first though before I make the appointments and I've had to pull in Nigel to help me out as I'm hitting a brick wall with the bureaucracy (as always).
Appearances can be deceptive. William's been on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster this week. We obviously had the big dilemma on Sunday night, but there's been numerous melt-downs and outbursts all week. It's the last week of a busy term so he's shattered but I think he's probably going through a bit of a growth spurt again so his emotions are all over the show. He's just working things out and we're trying our best to help him navigate it all.
Two weeks holidays. Bring it on.
Lorna.
