Great Barrier Reef

AJHS PE Department on tour!
Like I said in the last post, Grant had also organised a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We got the boat from the port in Cairns and it took about two hours to get to the outer reef where we docked at a little pontoon. We then had about three hours pottering around in the water and, when we got hungry, helping ourselves to a massive buffet. (I don't know what Grant enjoyed more?!)

You might not know this, but I'm not particularly keen on fish or anything found floating in the sea. Perhaps this goes back to many happy (cold) days spend on Ayr beach, and my experience "swimming" with dolphins in the Bay of Islands last Christmas hadn't really endeared me to this snorkelling malarkey. I was apprehensive at best, but the idea of the pontoon was awesome. It gave you the chance to step off into the ocean at your own pace and come and go as you pleased. I quickly got over the fear and as you can see from the photos, spent most of the afternoon in the ocean. I've never really understood people's love of diving (you know who you are)but after snorkelling here, I will definitely be donning the wetsuit and breathing apparatus next chance I get. Amazing.

And some photos from the snorkelling...

 This is what's in there...

Grant's reaction to the Buffet!
And some proof I went in!
The journey home...could almost be up the West Coast??
Cheers,
