The Last Week of School

We got back from Natureo on Wednesday around lunchtime and Iain was straight into work in the afternoon. Rather suddenly, the holidays were completely over!

William then had his end of year school trip on Thursday. I felt really guilty at just getting back from essentially six weeks away and throwing him into a trip - a full day trip but part of me just kept thinking about actually having a day to myself to get the house in order after so many weeks away. It also gave me time to sort all the presents for his teacher (Mme Hernandez) and his teaching assistant. Years ago Nathalie Hayman mentioned that she always liked to make some quintessential kiwi treats for her kids' teachers so inspired by that, I decided the best option was some good old home-made tablet. Oh and some wine (of course!). William returned from the trip absolutely buzzing. They'd been at some high ropes / outdoor climbing centre and he'd had a ball. Extra parts to note are that this was his first ever packed lunch; he had an IKEA quesadilla (emmental and chorizo) plus a box of cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber, and raw carrots; and that he told us the bus crashed when they got to the climbing place. I have no idea how much of this story is true but he's gone on and on about it since he got back.

William went into school on Friday morning armed with his gifts for the staff. I can't believe that his year's up at Joyeaux Bearn already. I just hope that he settles quickly at his new place (if he gets in, that is).

The temperature has really shot up this week and we're already into the high 30s. With this going on, we've decided its time to take the cover off the pool and start enjoying it while we have the chance. To be honest, I'm finding it a bit of a palaver already. It's been built with a stupid surround so that all the grass ends up in it all the time, and as complete novices, I feel like we're constantly checking and rechecking the pH levels to make sure its safe. In addition, as soon as the cover is off, I'm constantly on high alert so that William doesn't go near it. I feel like I can't even go into the house to make a cup of tea unless he comes with me. Anyway, yesterday was absolutely stifling hot so we made the most of it. In spite of all this, it was great fun. William loves it, and it was wonderful just catching the afternoon rays while he was bobbing about in the water.

On Saturday night we all went up to Bonnie and Mickey's house in Viven to celebrate Bonnie's 40th. It was absolutely sweltering when we got there around 7pm and the house was teaming with lots of people that we (I) already knew. I took a wee GF picnic to make sure that I had something to eat and while I was getting a solo feed in the kitchen, I met Bonnie's mum who was a very interesting character. Despite living in France for umpteen years, and her, her own daughter and grandchildren benefitting from the Freedom of Movement that the EU provides, she voted for Brexit. I was astounded. I had to bite my tongue and make my excuses to leave her company. Anyway, it was a great night and great chance to get dressed up and meet and socialise with people from outside the usual rugby circles.
Finally this week I've gotten into a new endeavour. Iain's been on at me for months to write about the food I make. I think he's got a point but I'm not really sure what sort of format I want it to take and how I should market and promote what I'm all about. This week I finally came up with a name - That Gluten Free Woman - and I've been playing around with a weebly web page. Let's see where this thing goes.

Lorna :-)
