Hot Water Beach

Have you ever thought about getting up at 6am, to be out of the house for 6.20am, in order to drive 40mins to a beach, so that you can dig a hole in the sand during low tide, in order to sit in it, in the pouring rain? New Zealand certainly has a lot to answer for as that's exactly what we did in the Coromandel.
As its name suggests, there are natural hot springs under Hot Water Beach but these are only accessible during low tide so you need to time your visit in order to make the most of the thermal waters. Once you've located a spring (you need to prod your feet in a bit!), it's all hands on deck: digging and digging to make your fortress from the tide. It was mental! We were all digging away and lying in big puddles in the rain! Incredibly, some of the water was too hot and we were having to jump out before we got burnt. As ever in NZ, none of this is regulated; you just pitch up on the beach with a shovel and get stuck in, there are no fenced or roped off areas, and there's no one there charging you five quid for the pleasure. As you'll gather from the photos below, it was awesome!
