No trip to NZ is complete without a wee adventure in Rotorua. Or as the Kiwis call it, Rotovegas! I love my mini but she's not exactly capable of a life on the Open Road so Mum and I rented a car and off we headed to the Sulphur City. On our first night in town, we headed along to a Maori show and Hangi where Mum got a chance to meet some bona fide Maori warriors, eat some amazing food which had been cooked in the ground using hot stones, then sing her heart out to some classic Maori songs.
Mum's favourite song of the evening was definitely Po Atarua, also known as Now Is The Hour, a song which she said my Dad always talked about the Kiwis singing as his ship was leaving Wellington harbour in the 1960s. If you don't know the song (I didn't), click here to hear it! If you're feeling cultural, have a wee click here for, arguably, NZ most successful Maori song (it got to No. 1 in the 80's!).More from the road trip to follow.
