Notes from the Road (7) - Bula!

Waiting to board our flight to Fiji
We spent weeks and weeks mulling over our best route back to Europe with a toddler. We had so many things to consider: flight duration, sky couch availability, destination holidays, layover times, night flights (in the hope that William would sleep), number of connections, and of course, cost. Finally we settled on Auckland - Fiji - LA (San Diego) - Edinburgh via Heathrow. We wanted to embrace the pacific one last time before leaving the region as you don't exactly shoot off to Raro or Samoa from Europe, and this also meant we could get a sky couch from LAX to LHR (gold if you're travelling with kids).

So, Fiji. This was Iain's second time there as he had been up for a conference a few years back, but this was my first time. After much research amongst our friends, we booked the Radisson Blu Resort on Denarau Island. It was an absolute slice of heaven and exactly what we needed after the chaos of packing up our lives in NZ. It's very family friendly but also has some adult only sections for sneaking away and grabbing some quiet time when the the menfolk are asleep. (I could be found there most days, in the afternoon.)

The Fijians are amazing people. So friendly, and they absolutely love kids. We would be sitting in a restaurant having dinner and the waiters or waitresses would come up and chat to William, and then take him away for a cuddle whilst they kept working on other tables. He absolutely loved the attention too!

Our days were generally spent having a walk along the beach to help our huge breakfast go down,  playing in and around the pool in the morning, lunch at the pool or by taking the bulabus down to the Port, afternoon naps, more pool time in the late afternoon and dinner in one of the many resort restaurants (or down at the Port). Absolute bliss for eight whole days. Magic.
