| Anglophone Fwends! |
How does one make new friends in a town where they don't know anyone at all, and can't speak the language? Love it or loathe it, Facebook, it seems is the medium for connecting these days. After a little bit of researching the groups of France, looking for anything that resembled a Gluten Free support group, I stumbled across the Anglophone Pau Pyrenées FB group; a place to connect with other English speakers in the region. Due to the giant oil and gas company, Total, having their France offices here, there is a huge ex-pat community and, coupled with the ex-pats of the rugby club and the other randoms in the region, there are actually quite large numbers of english speakers around. So I asked to join.
Within about an hour of posting on the APP group page that I had just moved here and was looking for any advice around gluten free cafes or restaurants, I'd had three friend requests and a whole load of information about playgroups and meet-ups and one of the girls, Julie, messaged to say her husband worked at the Club with Iain and would we like to come round for dinner. It's quite amazing what a little human connection can do for the soul.
Fast forward a couple of days and we were even at our first playgroup which turned out to be a birthday party. A real week of firsts!
